Understanding Weighted Grades
Most courses use weighted grades to reflect that not all assignments are equally important. A final exam worth 40% of your grade matters more than a single homework assignment worth 2%. Understanding how weighted grades work helps you prioritize your study time and predict your final grade.
To calculate weighted grades manually: convert each weight to a decimal (divide by 100), multiply each grade by its weight, and add all the products together. This calculator does that math automatically and shows you where you stand.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Wrong weights: Double-check your syllabus. "20%" means enter 20, not 0.20.
- Missing categories: Include all graded items, even small ones like participation.
- Weights not adding to 100%: If your syllabus weights add up to 100%, yours should too.
- Confusing weighted vs. points: If your class uses total points (not percentages), use the percentage calculator instead.
