Understanding Grade Calculations

Points vs. Weighted Grades

The biggest question is whether your class uses straight points or weighted categories.

Points-Based Grading

Every assignment has a point value. Your grade is total earned ÷ total possible.

Quiz 1: 18/20

Quiz 2: 15/20

Exam: 85/100

Total: 118/140 = 84.3%

Weighted Grading

Categories have different weights. A 40% exam counts more than 10% quizzes.

Quizzes (10%): 85% × 0.10 = 8.5

Homework (20%): 90% × 0.20 = 18

Exams (70%): 82% × 0.70 = 57.4

Total: 83.9%

GPA vs. Class Grade

Your class grade (like 85% or B+) is for one course. Your GPA combines all courses into a single number on a 4.0 scale. They're related but calculated differently.

  • Class grade uses points or weighted categories within one course
  • GPA converts letter grades to points (A=4.0, B=3.0) and weights by credit hours

Common Scenarios

"I want to know my current grade in Biology"

Check your syllabus. If it says "Exams 60%, Labs 25%, Homework 15%," use the Weighted Grade Calculator. If it just shows point values for each assignment, use the Percentage Calculator.

"What do I need on my final to get a B?"

Use the Final Grade Calculator. You'll need your current grade and how much the final is worth.

"What's my overall GPA this semester?"

Use the GPA Calculator. Enter each course's letter grade and credit hours.

"How is my grade calculated when I have 3 exams worth different amounts?"

If each exam has a specific weight (Midterm 1: 20%, Midterm 2: 30%, Final: 50%), use the Weighted Grade Calculator.

Grade Calculation Tips

Check Your Syllabus First

The syllabus tells you exactly how grades are calculated. Look for "Grading Policy" or "Grade Breakdown" sections.

Rounding Varies by School

Some professors round up at 89.5%, others don't round at all. Don't assume your calculated grade will be rounded favorably.

Use These as Estimates

Calculators give estimates. Your official grade comes from your school's system and may include factors you haven't accounted for.

Track Throughout the Semester

Don't wait until finals to calculate your grade. Regular tracking lets you adjust your effort before it's too late.
