Worked Example

Marcus has an 82% in Chemistry. His final exam is worth 30% of his grade. He wants to end with a B (83%).

Step 1: Points already secured = 82 × (1 - 0.30) = 82 × 0.70 = 57.4

Step 2: Points still needed = 83 - 57.4 = 25.6

Step 3: Required final score = 25.6 ÷ 0.30 = 85.3%

Marcus needs an 85.3% on his final to get a B in Chemistry. That's achievable with solid studying.

The Formula

This calculator uses the weighted average formula:

Required = (Target - Current × (1 - Weight)) ÷ Weight

Where Target is your desired grade, Current is your grade before the final, and Weight is the final exam's percentage of your total grade.

Tips for Final Exam Success

  • Know your minimum: Calculate what you need just to pass, not just your ideal grade. This reduces stress.
  • Start early: Don't wait until the night before. Use our study schedule generator to plan ahead.
  • Focus on weak areas: If you bombed one unit during the semester, prioritize reviewing that material.
  • Practice with old exams: Many professors reuse question formats. Ask if practice exams are available.
